Welcome to the Expert Meeting on Kidney Stones in Copenhagen 13 September 2019!
The meeting is a joint venture of Lillebælt Hospital and University of Southern Denmark in Vejle, Denmark and Danderyd Hospital and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
We invite all physicians and other professionals who want an update on intracorporeal lithotripsy in kidney stone management.
Incidence of kidney stones is increasing rapidly worldwide. Stone disease is so diverse, which demands a personalized approach to management, and this may be challenging. In this perspective intracorporeal lithotripsy devices have proven to be key players. Technological developments in the field has been dramatic during recent years and has to a large extent ‘driven’ clinical activity; however, high level of evidence for different treatment approaches is still lacking. Due to the extreme diversity of the disease randomized controlled trials are very difficult to establish in a clinically meaningful context. Therefore, according to the framework of Evidence Based medicine (EBM) it is highly important from a scientific point of view to evaluate the balance between level of evidence, clinical expertise and patients’ preferences in this demanding field. At this meeting we will try to approach these challenges be inviting key opinion leaders in the field to evaluate evidence and controversies through discussions and presentations.
The meeting will result in three scoping reviews based on the presentations. The reviews will be published in the World Journal of Urology.

Kay Thomas qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, London in 1994. She trained in the London Area and did her MD thesis as a Research Fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 2006 she was appointed as a consultant post at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Her specialist interest is Endourology with a particular focus on cystinuria and upper tract TCC. She developed, validated and published the Guy’s Stone Score which is a measure of stone complexity for PCNL and is in the BAUS National Benchmarking Audit. She established the cystinuria clinic at Guy’s over 10 years ago where over 200 patients have been seen and the work has been published/presented both Nationally and Internationally. She is also part of a multidisciplinary team managing upper tract TCC and she developed a method of using Bouins to improve the interpretation of ureteroscopic biopsies which was been adopted by our National Pathology Guidelines.
She is the Disease Area Co-ordinator for Stones in the eUROGEN European Reference Network (ERN). In addition she is a faculty member of the EAU Urolithiasis Guidelines and the NICE Renal and Ureteric Stone Guidelines published earlier this year.
Lastly in addition to clinical and research interests she has a managerial role in Guy’s and St Thomas’ as a Clinical Director responsible for managing the Departments of Transplant, Nephrology and Urology.

Education
Personal statement
My background is in renal biology, and I first became linked with the study of kidney stone diseases when I began working with the program project grant in shock wave lithotripsy in 1995. In 1998 I saw my first CT scans of urinary stones, and this launched my efforts to understand the structure of stones. Having done the first micro CT scans of stones here at IU, I added to that experience by studying with Michel Daudon in Paris. Since then my laboratory has leveraged the power of micro CT to provide insights into the mechanisms by which stones are initially retained within the kidney during their early growth.
